I think it wouldn’t have been upsetting at all if it wasn’t a hot topic in the US at this time. Usually, nobody is interested in what a beauty contestant thinks (we let not decide them if one should invade Iraq or Iran – and, btw, yes, one should). This is normally the task of intellectuals, philosophers, politicians and scientists.
I think politicizing a beauty contest is something very American. In Europe this is handled in a different way, at least, this is my personal experience.
